I am bad, and that's good.
I will never be good, and that's not bad.
There's no one I'd rather be...
than me.
Ralph's real memories begin the day Litwak's Family Fun Center first plugged in its Fix-It Felix Jr. machine. Everything before that is just backstory, the important parts of which are reenacted in a cutscene at the start of each game.
♫ Livin' in a stump on his very own land
Until his world went crazy... ♫
He minded his own business until, one night, he went to sleep in his tree-stump home. When he woke up the next morning, he'd been unceremoniously relocated to the nearby garbage dump.
"HEY! WHO MOVED MY STUMP?"
When he looked to where the forest used to be, he saw that the Niceland apartment building had risen in its place.
♫ So he got mad!
And he turned bad!
Brick by brick-- ♫
"I'M GONNA WRECK IT!"
The Nicelanders called on their building superintendent, Fix-It Felix Jr., wielder of a magic hammer of instant repair. And thus began a battle that would last for thirty years, with Ralph struggling to thwart Felix, but ultimately getting thrown off the roof by the Nicelanders at the end of the round.
It becomes kinda hard to love your job when no one else seems to like you for doing it.
Felix at least tried to be nice to him after the arcade closed, when the characters could be themselves. The Nicelanders didn't even bother. To them, he was just the bad guy who wrecked the building.
Sometimes I think, man, it sure must be nice being the good guy.
He wasn't thinking about what his absence would do to the game, the day he walked off. All he was thinking about was the medal. Gene, the apartments' manager, had said that if Ralph wanted the Nicelanders' respect, he'd have to win a medal, like the one they awarded Felix when he won a round. But where was a bad guy going to win a medal?
That crummy medal was my ticket to a better life!
He found a place where he could win a medal. He found a candy-coated heart of darkness that needed his not-at-all delicate touch. And in the end, he not only healed a wounded land... he found friends.
Because if that little girl likes me, how bad can I be?
Description: Ralph is, to quote the Buckner and Garcia song about his game, "nine feet tall with really big hands" and weighs in at 643 pounds. He looks like a hobo and he still occasionally smells, at least to digital noses, of the garbage dump he calls home.
And he is strong. Unbelievably strong. On his first visit to Sugar Rush Speedway, one punch from him was enough to split a jawbreaker — a feat impossible to any of the game's natives.
How's my wrecking? Call 1-800-TOBIKOMI.
